ICSID released the Caseload—Statistics of 2023, providing an overview of the investment arbitration (mediation) cases for the entire year. To date, ICSID has been “escorting” international investors for nearly sixty years. As one of the five major international organizations under the World Bank, ICSID has handled most of the international investment disputes worldwide. As of December 2023, the number of investment arbitration (mediation) cases accepted by ICSID has approached a thousand.

Since ICSID registered its first case in 1972, “Holiday Inns S.A. and others v. Morocco (ICSID Case No. ARB/72/1)”, the number of cases registered by ICSID has reached 967 as of December 31, 2023. Over the past fifty years, the number of ICSID cases has shown an explosive growth trend since 1997. In 2021, ICSID handled a record high of 66 cases, and in 2023, it handled 57 cases. Nowadays, ICSID’s annual caseload exceeds the total number of cases handled between 1972 and 1997.
